Silverchair's fifth studio album;
their first after a five year break, was certainly worth the wait. It is
different to previous Silverchair work and different to any other pop/rock album
we've ever heard. One can certainly hear how mature Daniel Johns has become as a
songwriter.
The opening track, 'Young Modern Station' will leave you in awe at its
refreshingly different chord progression as you realise that you're listening to
something groundbreaking.
The contrast in style and structure between 'Straight Lines' and 'If You Keep
Losing Sleep' shows off Johns' song writing skills. 'If You Keep Losing Sleep'
is among our favourite tracks on the album due to its many different elements,
including Fantasia-esque orchestral arrangements by Van Dyke Parks and the
track's epic climax which abruptly ends on the supertonic note. 'If You Keep
Losing Sleep' is probably the most unpredictable track on the album.
'Those Thieving Birds (Part 1) / Strange Behaviour / Those Thieving Birds (Part
2)' is an interesting track comprising of three sections. The easygoing guitar
in parts one and two of 'Those Thieving Birds' produces a very typical
Australian sound.
'Mind Reader' is another one of our favourites; an upbeat rock track featuring
Daniel Johns' "musical soulmate" Paul Mac on the keys. Again, the chord
progression will raise eyebrows for the musically savvy, and produce a
satisfying experience for all of something different but deeply engaging.
The culmination of the album resides in the epic yet calm track 'All Across The
World' which is the perfect ending to such a unique masterpiece. |

A joyous coming of age. My favourite, if I had to choose, is the "Those Theiving Birds" medley. I've been a fan since the beginning and I respect where they have come from and where they are going. Great work guys!
